How to read the charts

1. When placing calls to Philadelphia and the surrounding suburbs, your per call cost is determined by the following factors: the area code you dial; the exchange (the first three digits of the telephone number) you dial; and, the time of day and day of week when the call is placed.
2. To determine the cost of a call, first look at the local calling area chart and find the exchange for the particular area code you are dialing. Note the "Call Area" associated with this exchange.
3. Next, look at the time chart to see the definitions of "weekday", "evening", and "night and weekend".
4. Finally, look at the appropriate rate chart to determine either the un-timed rate (Area 1 calls) or the per-minute rate (Areas 2 through 5).

For example: suppose you wish to call someone in the 940 exchange of the 610 area code at 9:45PM. Upon examination of the local calling area chart, you see that exchange 940 is in Call Area 2 relative to the university's 660 exchange. When you look at the time chart, you see that 9:45PM falls into Bell Atlantic's "evening" classification. Therefore, when you look at the per-minute rate chart for calls made in the evening from Call Area 2, you learn that the call will cost you five cents for the first minute and two cents for each minute thereafter.
