General Information and Services

Campus Extensions

A personal or shared extension for a faculty or staff member must be requested by a department head or the department’s administrative assistant. Faculty and staff extensions are typically assigned a number that can be dialed from off campus by adding the area code and exchange ‘610-660’ to the 4 digit extension.. This is true for any extension in the range of extension numbers from 1000 to 3499. All extensions are programmed and installed by one of our staff on the University owned NEC system.

Telephone Sets

Basic (analog)

If a user has basic (analog) service, virtually any standard residential style telephone will work on the extension. Typically, the telecommunications department will issue and install a standard desk set. For specific requirements and at an additional cost, we can also provide a telephone that will support basic caller id and/or a speakerphone. Multi-line analog sets are supported only in specific previously-approved situations.

Digital

If a user has the need for multiple line appearances or other more sophisticated features, the users’ department may elect to purchase a Digital (Dterm) telephone set. The cost for these phones is $250 that is chargeable to the user’s department.

ACD (click for link)

If a user is part of a group that answers similar calls, he or she may be assigned into an ACD group. Users then would be assigned an ACD phone and would be responsible for logging into and out of the group. For information about using an ACD phone, click here. For configuring a new ACD group or to revise the programming for an existing group, a department head must place a request through out help desk. One of the telecommunications staff will then work with you to design a solution.

PINs

Many campus extensions are restricted from calling beyond the immediate local area. When a user dials off campus, he or she may be prompted for a PIN. This prompt will sound like broken dialtone after the caller has finished dialing the desired number. When the caller hears this prompt, he or she must enter a PIN to complete the call. Each Faculty and Staff person is issued a PIN at the request of their department head or the department administrative assistant. This 6 digit code is assigned exclusively to that individual and should not be shared. Billing detail for every call is submitted to the department head at the end of each month.

Billing

Departments are charged at a rate of $21 per month per extension. In addition usage is billed for local and long distance calling based on the PIN or the extension. These bills including detail are generated at the end of each month and sent to each department head for review.

Voicemail (click for link)

The University maintains and Octel Voicemail system. Users are assigned a unique password-protected mailbox that can be accessed from any telephone. Users may request a mailbox via their department head or administrative assistant. Voicemail boxes are typically associated with an extension that forwards callers to the appropriate mailbox, mailbox options, or menu.

Departments may also request specialized menus, bulletins, announcements, and routing options for any of their extensions. Menus and options can be customized by the telecommunications staff to provide callers an efficient method for accessing information or employee.

Enhanced Voicemail (EVM) (click for link)

We recently added a feature to the campus voicemail system that allows users to receive their voicemail messages via their e-mail. You may listen to your voice mail messages from your campus e-mail account or another e-mail service. As long as you have a working sound card and speakers, you can listen to your voicemail on your PC or laptop. You have the ability to delete these messages via your email interface. You may also forward a voice message as a file to another e-mail user. The intent of this feature is to allow a simple and convenient single user interface for receiving and managing messages. Please note that voice messages would still be delivered to your voicemail box just as they are now, and these can still be retrieved from any phone. It is not necessary then to only use the e-mail-based service.

If you are interested in using this feature, e-mail Brian Shepherd at bshepher@sju.edu please let me know and we will set up your account and send you directions about setting up your service. You will need to use Internet Explorer for the initial set up, but this is not necessary for receiving and handling messages.

911 Calling

The University supports a sophisticated 911 system that provides precise caller location to emergency personnel in the event of an emergency. Our campus security office is simultaneously bridged into your 911 call to insure a rapid and efficient response to any campus emergency. Also, calls directly to Public Safety and Security on their extension (1111) are automatically recorded for your protection and for quality assurance.

Cellular Phones

Requests for cellular service must be submitted by a department head. Current vendors include Nextel, Cingular, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless. The University is currently preparing a Request for Porposal for cellular/wireless services from several carriers. Relevant information will be posted.
