Network Access Requirements

Requirements

To connect to the campus network, you will need:

  1. A computer with a 10/100 Ethernet network card or a wireless network card.
  2. In some locations, you may also be required to complete Network Registration

Wireless Network Access Availability

Wireless access is available in the following locations on campus:

Residence Halls/Houses: McShain, Sourin, LaFarge, Xavier, St. Mary’s, St. Albert’s, Jordan, Hogan, Sullivan

Main Campus: Hawk's Nest and cafeterias in Campion, Drexel Library, Mandeville, Post, and Gest Lawn

Mac OS 8.x - 9.x

Below are the instructions on how to connect your Macintosh Mac OS 8.x - 9.x computer to the Saint Joseph's University network. Accessing the Saint Joseph's University network will allow you to check your e-mail, browse the Internet, and access your own personal network drive.

  1. Connect one end of your Ethernet/RJ-45 cable (the cable looks like an extra-thick phone cord) to a network access point or a network jack. Connect the other end of your Ethernet cable to your computer's Ethernet port.
  2. From the Apple Menu, choose Control Panels and choose AppleTalk.

  3. The AppleTalk window will pop up. Switch your connection to Ethernet built-in.

  4. In the AppleTalk control panel, make sure the Connect via menu is set to Ethernet built-in and that your Current Zone is set to SJU Student EtherTalk.

  5. Close your AppleTalk control panel. And save your settings.

  6. Open your Apple Menu, choose Control Panels, and choose the TCP/IP control panel.


  7. Change your TCP/IP setting so that the Connect Via menu is set to Ethernet built-in.

  8. Make sure that the Configure menu is set to Using DHCP Server and that you enter sju.edu in the Search domains text area.

  9. Close your TCP/IP control panel and save your settings.

  10. You have now configured your computer to access the Saint Joseph's University network.

Mac OS X

  1. Plug your Ethernet cable in the Ethernet port of your Mac OS X computer, then plug the other end of the Ethernet cable in the network port.
  2. Turn on your computer.
  3. At the Finder level, click on the blue apple icon on the upper left hand corner of the screen.
  4. Scroll down to and click on System Preferences.

  5. Click on the Network pane.

  6. The Network pane window will open.
  7. Click on the TCP/IP tab. The IP Address field, Subnet Mask field, and Router field will automatically be filled with the correct numbers by the University's DHCP server.
  8. Click on the AppleTalk tab.

  9. Check the Make AppleTalk Active box. Click the Apply Now button.

  10. The Apple Talk Zone will be set to SAINT JOSEPH'S UNIVERSITY. Make sure that the Configure: field is set to Automatically.
  11. Click on System Preferences on the menu bar, click on Quit System Preferencess to exit the program.

  12. You have now configured your computer to access the Saint Joseph's University network.

Windows 95/98/ME

  1. From your Start menu, choose Settings... Control Panel...
  2. Double-Click on Network icon. You will see a list of various network components.
  3. Please do NOT delete the following component:
    • 3Com Network Adapter or other Network Adapters (i.e. Linksys, Intel, etc.)
  4. Please delete the rest of the components, listed below:
    • IPX/SPX compatible protocol
    • NETBEUI
    • Client for Netware Networks
  5. Do not exit the Network Control Panel yet.
  6. Your network adapter should still be listed.
  7. Click on Add... Choose Protocol.
  8. Click Add...
  9. On the left, Click on Microsoft.
  10. On the right hand-side, choose TCP/IP.
  11. Click OK.
  12. The network properties window should now resemble the following picture.

  13. Do not exit the Network Control Panel yet.
  14. Once back to the Network Control Panel, select the TCP/IP component listed above, and Click Properties...
  15. You will see a number of tabs across the top, choose the IP ADDRESS tab.
  16. Click on "Obtain IP Address automatically".

  17. Choose the WINS CONFIGURATION tab.
  18. Click on "Disable WINS Resolution".

  19. Choose the DNS CONFIGURATION tab.
  20. Click on "Disable DNS".

  21. Click on the Gateway tab.
  22. There should not be any gateways listed. Remove any gateways.

  23. Click OK.
  24. Do not exit the Network Control Panel yet.
  25. If the Client for Microsoft Networks is not listed, add it by clicking Add, then Client, then Microsoft, and last Client for Microsoft Networks.
  26. Click on Client for Microsoft Networks. Click Properties. Under login validation, "Log on to Windows NT domain" should be selected. Enter SJU for the Windows NT domain. Under network logon options, select Logon and restore network connections. Click OK.

  27. If asked to Restart, do NOT Restart
  28. From your Start menu, choose Run...
  29. Type in the word "regedit" (without quotes) and click OK.
  30. Click + symbol next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
  31. Click + symbol next to System
  32. Click + symbol next to CurrentControlSet
  33. Click + symbol next to Services
  34. Click + symbol next to VxD
  35. Click on VNETSUP folder
  36. From the menu bar, Click Edit
  37. Select New and click on DWORD Value
  38. An item labeled "New Value #1" will appear on the right hand side of the window.
  39. Rename it "EnablePlainTextPassword" (without quotes)
    Note: spelling is very important.
  40. Double click EnablePlainTextPassword.
  41. Choose Hexadecimal for the Base.
  42. Change the Value data to 1.
  43. Click OK.
  44. Close the Registry Editor window.
  45. Restart your computer
  46. If everything went well, you should be able to login to the Saint Joseph's University network by using your NETWORK username and password.

Windows 2000

Part 1 - Network Settings
  1. From the Start menu, choose Settings and click on Network and Dial-up Connections.
  2. Using the right mouse button, click on Local Area Connection and choose Properties. Your screen should resemble the following:

  3. If you are missing any of these components, you will need to add them.
    • To add Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click Install., choose Protocol, and Click Add. Select the Internet Protocol and click OK.
    • To add Client for Microsoft Networks, click Install., choose Client, and Click Add. Select Client for Microsoft Networks and click OK.
    • To add File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks, click Install., choose Service, and Click Add. Select File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks and click OK.
  4. Click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Choose Properties from the boxes below. You will see the following:

  5. Select Obtain an IP address automatically. Also select Obtain DNS server address automatically. Click OK.
  6. Next, you will need to set yourself up as a user on the computer. From the Start menu, choose Settings and click on Control Panel. Double-click on Users & Passwords. Choose Add. Enter your SJU user name, your full name, and description.

  7. Click Next and enter your SJU password twice.
  8. Click Next again. Select Standard User and click Finish.

  9. Restart your computer
  10. If everything went well, you should be able to login to the Saint Joseph's University network by using your NETWORK username and password.
Part 2 - Mapping Your J: Drive
  1. Right click on My Computer and click Map Network Drive...
  2. Select J: for Drive and type in \\sju_fs1\homes for Folder. Also, check the box labeled "Reconnect at logon. Click Finish.

  3. If you are prompted for a User name and Password, please enter your NETWORK account information. If you did not receive or have misplaced your computer account information, Click Here .

Windows XP

Part 1 - Network settings
  1. Right click on My Network Places and click Properties.

  2. Right click on Local Area Connection and click Properties.

  3. Uncheck File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks and QoS Packet Scheduler and then select (highlight) Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties button.

  4. By default it should have "Obtain an IP address automatically", and "Obtain DNS server address automatically" already chosen. If not change it, and click OK.

  5. Close any open boxes and Right click on My Computer and click Properties.

  6. Under the Computer Name tab click on the Change button.

  7. Type in what you wish to call your computer in the "Computer name" field. In the "Member of" section, choose Workgroup and type in SJU. Click OK.

  8. Click OK when prompted restart your computer.
Part 2 - Mapping Your J: Drive
  1. Right click on My Computer and click Map Network Drive...

  2. Select J: for Drive and type in \\sju_fs1\homes for Folder. Also, check the box labeled "Reconnect at logon. Click Finish.

  3. If you are prompted for a User name and Password, please enter your NETWORK account information. If you did not receive or have misplaced your computer account information, Click Here .
