Eudora

Eudora 6 is currently the University's supported email client. Below are some basic tips on using eudora.

Creating and Sending a Message

  1. To create a new message, click on the New Message icon on the toolbar. You can also choose Message , New Message . A new blank message window will appear.
  2. Normal is the default priority level for new messages. To set a priority level other than normal go to the Priority Pop-up Menu which is the small scroll box located under the toolbar on the left hand side, click on the scroll down arrow and click on one of the choices.
  3. In the "To" section, type the recipient's nickname or e-mail address. In the Subject section, type a subject name. If you wish, you can type a nickname or e-mail address in the cc section (copy will be sent to that person and all recipients will know). If you wish, you can type a bcc (copy will be sent to person and no one but sender will know).
  4. To send the New Message, click on Send or choose Message , Send Immediately . If the Styles Dialog Box appears, click on Plain in order for everyone at SJU to see the message.

Creating a Filter for SPAM Email

  1. From the top menu bar, click on Tools and select Filters.
  2. Change the Header to "Subject:" from the drop down menu and select "contains" from the drop down box and type in {Spam?} .
  3. Next select, "ignore" and underneath Action, select Transfer to: and choose either Trash or Junk.
  4. When you exit out of this window, it will ask you if you want to save changes. Click on Yes.

If you would like to view a video tutorial on how to create a filter, please choose from the below options:

Determining the Status of an Incoming Message

  1. Look at the "Blue Circle" column to determine the status of a message.
  2. The status of a message will appear as one of the following:
      (blue circle)    Unread Message
      (no circle)       Read Message
      (left arrow)     Message Replied
      (right arrow)   Message Forwarded

Reading a Message

  1. To read a message, highlight it and double click on it. This is the same thing as opening the message.
  2. To close the message, PC users can click on the "X" in the upper right corner of the menubar. Be careful not to click on the "X" in the most upper right corner as that will close the Eudora application.  Mac users can click on the Close box, the box on the upper left hand side.
  3. If you have enabled the "Preview Message" feature, you can also read an incoming message by highlighting the message and looking at its contents in the lower window. However, just recognize that the blue bullet indicating unread message will continue to be displayed in the status field.

Replying to a Message

  1. You can reply to a message by first opening the message, and then clicking on the Reply icon on the toolbar. You can also choose Message , Reply .
  2. You will see that "To:" and "From:" are already filled out. If you wish, you can change the subject name and add cc's or bcc's.
  3. To type your reply at the top of the message, PC users can place the mousetip to the left of the word "At", click, then hit the Enter key.  Mac users can click to the left of  ">", then hit the Enter key.  This will move the Sender's text down. Go back to the blank line and start typing your reply on the blank line.
  4. To type your reply at the bottom of the message, scroll down to the bottom of the message, and click on the first line available underneath the message. Type your reply.
  5. To send your reply, click on Send .

Forwarding a Message

  1. You can forward a message by first opening the message and then clicking on the Forward icon on the toolbar. You can also choose Message , Forward .
  2. In the "To:" section, type the nickname or e-mail address of the person to whom you wish to forward the message.
  3. If necessary, you can modify the subject name and add cc's and bcc's
  4. You can add an introductory comment at the top of the message being forwarded. To add your comment, PC users can place the mousetip to the left of the word "At", click, then hit the Enter key. Mac users can click to the left of  ">", then hit the Enter key.  The text of the message being forwarded will be moved down and you can start typing your introductory comment at the top blank line.
  5. When you are ready to forward the message, click Send .

Attaching a File to a Message

  1. Because people use various e-mail programs, when you need to send out a message to faculty and staff, it is essential that you send your message in plain text format typed in Eudora, or if you have created a document in another application, e.g., MS Word, you can copy and paste it into Eudora. You are then guaranteed all will be able to read your message.
  2. If you decide to send an attachment because you are confident your recipient will be able to open it, the following applies: The attached file functions like a "rider" to the e-mail message, and does not appear within the message text. Instead the name of the document is displayed automatically in the Attached field of the message header section.
  3. To attach a file to an outgoing message:
Go to Message and choose Attach File or Attach Document.  The Attach File dialog is displayed. Locate the file you want, select it, and click the Open or Attach button to attach the document to the current message. You can add as many attachments as you want to a message.
  4. To detach an attached document before the message is sent:
Select the document in the attached field.
Press either the Backspace key or the Delete key.

Return Receipt

  1. You can request a recipient to notify you after they have read an e-mail. The recipient has three choices. Recipient can click Notify Sender Now , Notify Sender Later , Notify Sender Never . (If the recipient clicks Notify Sender Cancel this means the recipient wants to continue reading the e-mail.)
  2. Based on these choices, it is obvious that the sender does not have control over whether a receipt will actually be sent by a recipient. Also, this function does not work in all cases - it depends on the e-mail application your recipients are using.
  3. To request a receipt, in the New Message window, click on the Return Receipt icon on the toolbar before sending the message. The depressed icon is your sign that you have requested a receipt. Send a copy of the message to yourself to actually see the request for the receipt

Printing a Message

  1. The easiest way to print a message is to click on the Print icon. A print dialog box will open and you can choose the printer, paper size, and page orientation, or you can adjust settings by choosing File , Page Setup or File , Print Setup .
  2. PC users - If you wish to preview how a document will look when it is printed, choose File , Print Preview . Click on Print to print the document. Click on Close if you don't want to print the document. You can change print settings by choosing File , Print , Properties .

Deleting a Message

  1. You can delete a message by choosing Message , Delete from the menubar.
  2. When you delete a message, it is placed in the Trash.
  3. You can recover a message from the Trash if you have not emptied the trash.

Emptying the Trash

  1. It is a good idea to periodically delete the messages in your Trash to keep your system running efficiently.
  2. To empty the Trash, go to the menubar and choose Special , Empty Trash .
